A Handy Domestic Security Checkpoint List

Wooden Front door: A mortice deadlock rated to British Standard (BS3621) or with at least 5 levers fitted with a nightlatch.

Alternatively, a  BS3621 rated nightlatch (but which must be deadlocked when property is secured)

UPVC or composite front door.

A multipoint mechanism comprising of hooks and / or deadbolts.

A BS 3 star (TS007) rated Euro cylinder, the secure side fitted on the exterior side

Alternatively, if handles are fitted, Secured by Design PAS 24 2 star handles are a good idea with at least  a BS 1 star cylinder fitted

Wooden Back or side door

A mortice sash lock with at least 5 levers or rated to BS3621

Key operated bolts, (eg starbolts at top and bottom of door on inside unless it is a door used for access into the property)

UPVC or composite back or side door

A multipoint mechanism comprising of hooks and / or deadbolts.

A BS 3 star (TS007) rated Euro cylinder, the secure side fitted on the exterior side

Alternatively, if handles are fitted, Secured by Design PAS 24 2 star handles are a good idea with at least  a BS 1 star cylinder fitted

UPVC French doors

A multipoint mechanism comprising of hooks (and preferably top and bottom shootbolts) on the master door and top and bottom shootbolts on the slave door.

Ideally, 3 star TS007 cylinders to be fitted on both doors although if the master has shootbolts, a 3 star lock on the master leaf alone may thwart attack.

If 3 star locks are not fitted a "Patlock" type device is a good idea to keep the handles locked together when the doors are locked. (Locking spindles should also be fitted with Patlock devices.

Any UPVC doors can also be fitted with sash jammer devices on the inside as long as it is not the final exit needing to be accessed again from outside the property.

Garages or Sheds

Up and over garage door can be fitted with either cruciform type bolt locks each side or a 5 lever mortice deadlock bolted to each side if the door allows.

There are devices available like the "Garage Defender" locks, which bolt into the concrete in front of the door to stop it from being opened from outside if they are locked in place

Good quality padlocks or 5 lever deadlocks or sashlocks should be used on side doors to garages or doors to sheds if the structure allows such a lock to be fitted.

Aluminium doors

Some are made with the multipoint inside the doorframe. Most of these are now obsolete but the Euro cylinder versions can be upgraded with 3 star cylinders and the oval profile type with snap secure oval profiles.

If it is a door allowing standard lever type mortice lock(s), my personal preference would be a lock such as the "Chubb / Union 3G220", or the "Legge / Asec 2 inch narrow 5 lever mortice lock" in addition to anything else fitted.

Bifold doors

If they accept a Euro cylinder, then, as with anything else that does, 3 star TS007, Sold Secure Diamond rated locks are usually the safest and most secure option. If locking mechanism is only accessible from inside, then cylinder choice is not as important.

Windows

Espagnolette (espag) mechanism on UPVC with lockable handle on inside.

Lockable handle on inside on wooden windows, mini starbolt type locks or other type of wooden window key operated locks
